"Make your heart as big as the Ocean..." Grandmaster T.K. Shih, OMD, my teacher
The art of qigong healing can be said to be more than 5,000 years old. It is the foundation of all of the other Chinese healing arts, and the oldest.
Qigong means, "energy practice." It is the art of cultivating energy in the body, mind and spirit. Qigong practice itself can consist of gentle movement and seated, standing or laying down meditation. There is even meditation that can be done while walking. "Qi" means energy, and qi is the life force energy of the body, and all life in the Universe. It is often referred to as "biologic energy," or "subtle energy" as well.
Qigong practice is done for well being, and for spiritual and mental growth and development. You can practice qigong at home, very easily every day, for good health. There are many "schools" of qigong, ranging from healing qigong for medicine, to wellness, spiritual qigong and martial arts. In healing work, we focus soley on the healing aspects of working with energy.
Qi healing is the art of locating imbalances in the body's energy, and correcting them with special techniques. The art of qi healing (as all of Chinese medicine) focuses on creating an abundance and free flow of energy in the body. When there is "free flow," there is good nourishment of the body with qi, and health is a natural occurence. When there is obstruction, there is pain, or health challenges result. Also, qi must be in adequate supply and not "excessive," or "depleted." Much of qigong practice is focused on the growth of energy (cultivation) and circulation of energy.
You can practice self healing at home, or receive it in the clinical setting as part of your care. A trained qi healer or "qigong therapist," has usually completed formal training and certification with a qigong master, or grandmaster, to learn to help others. The art of qi healing consists of learning self cultivation, before learning to help others. Then, training focuses on how to help others through the art of "external qi healing." Qi healing uses the mind and the heart together to heal the patient. The practitioner will remove blockages, and restore flow. Techniques are ancient and often have been passed down for many generations. Qi healing is a very honoring, quiet, and also empowering art.
Qi healing involves receiving healing in the clinic, (often with acupuncture or herbs, or other Chinese medicine services) and also learning to practice on your own, for your own wellness and health. It is very easy to learn qigong, and anyone can practice. One half hour of practice a day can greatly improve the quality of your life and health, and changes can be seen in the body, mind and spirit. Nowadays, there is much medical and scientific research that documents many ways in which qigong movement, meditation and visualization and breathing methods create healing in the body, mind and spirit.
The above quote near the ocean picture by my teacher says it all for me about qigong. When your heart is big, and you are humble, you can be open to great things. "All things flow down to the ocean, because it is low." The ocean is great, and powerful, because it is low. So we also can be, if we make our hearts as big as the ocean.
