chinese medicine

Chinese medicine is the oldest "traditional" medicine on the planet.  It consists of the arts of qigong, acupuncture, herbal medicine, tui na (a type of meridian massage) and dietary practices.   The oldest healing art, qigong, can be said to be more than 5,000 years old, with acupuncture and herbs appearing around 2400 years ago.

Chinese medicine follows the idea that we are all one with the Universe, and all is connected.  What we do to ourselves, we do to the world around us, and what happens in our enviroment, will affect our bodies and health as well.

The basic theory of Chinese medicine states that when your energy is abundant and flowing smoothly, good health is possible.  When there is pain or disease, there is illness or depletion in the body's energy.

Chinese medicine works to restore balance in the energy system.  Acupuncture is the most commonly known Chinese healing art, and is very well known to western medicine at this point for its ability to treat chronic, stubborn or "evasive" health challenges.  The World Health Organization has sanctioned its use for over forty health challenges. Many westerners are now finding the positive healing effects of acupuncture can be used for many health challenges from arthritic pain to support during healing from cancer, to infertility and women's health and even children's health.  Chinese medicine is safe, natural
and has very few if any side effects.  It can be used in harmony with western medicine, or as a sole therapy.  In fact, many physicians refer patients for acupuncture to support various therapies they receive in western medicine (such as fertility, oncology care, orthopedic health, depression and more).

Very fine needles are used during acupuncture treatment. They are sterilized, and single use only.  After use, they are disposed of.   Treatment is painless, gentle and relaxing.  The style I practice involves gentle needling and using fewer needles than most.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the ease and comfort.

Some therapies used in our office are:  Acupuncture, qi healing, cupping, moxibustion (or "moxa," the burning of herbs over the channels to warm and ease the flow of qi), and herbal medicine.   Qigong practice is also included as part of your appointment, should you desire to learn methods of self-healing for practice at home.  I like to offer this to every patient, because it is very helpful to accelerate healing and is a wonderful practice to maintain wellness.

I am always happy to answer questions and discuss your wellness and health needs on the phone, prior to an appointment.  Please feel free to call 203.878.9913 to make an appointment or if you have questions
